Irx Vs OdaTX

Looking through the API, I see headers like IcString which subclasses OdString. But all the of the samples appear to use OdString, In what cases would I want to use IcString or IcEdCommand vs OdEdCommand, IcEdSelectionSet vs OdDbSelectionSet etc?
Is one preferred over another?
