just a thought, there is a software package that i use for renders that has very good suport for renderman/bmrt (rib) called Ayam3D, http://www.ayam3d.org/ . if you could export to it's format you could use it to set materials/shaders for the rendering.

the best thing (imo) you can do is to get a copy of Machiery's Handbook.
most drafting texts cover machine drawings,
but you will out grow what they cover very quickly.

It is intended for Win32 only, but i've been running it on Linux with Wine. It works but a couple of the features are inoperable. shade/hide requires a recompile of Wine for OpenGL. Layer-Explorer will lock(use layer command). and printing is a pain to set up.
